Yearling sales entries 2017

By | News | No Comments

On Friday Todd Watt (Tattersalls) and Tim Kent (GOFFS UK) made their annual visits to Elkington to assess the yearlings. Although we have an idea as to which sale the yearlings will get into ultimately it is the sales representatives that have the final say.

Todd came to us first thing in the morning and Tim joined us in the afternoon. This gave the horses and staff a good break in-between shows. Luckily the weather was beautiful and the yearlings showed themselves off beautifully despite the fillies enjoying the sunshine too much and all having a nap in the sand school prior to Todd’s arrival!

It’s always interesting to hear the sales representatives opinions on our stock and we were delighted with the comments on the yearlings condition and appearances.

The sales entries are confirmed as follows:

  • Sepoy x Intermission filly – Tattersalls Book 3
  • Lethal Force x Jadwiga filly – Tattersalls Book 3
  • Kyllachy x Dream in Waiting filly – Tattersalls Book 3
  • Mukhadram x Skyrider colt – Tattersalls Book 3
  • Garswood x Galante filly – Tattersalls Book 4
  • Bated Breath x Glee Club filly is to be retained.

The yearlings are available to view at Elkington Stud prior to the sales if required. Please contact us for a viewing appointment.

Foaling Information Morning

By | News | No Comments

Members of the Cheltenham and Three Counties Race Club visited today for our very first Foaling Information Morning. Sadly we couldn’t open the event up to non-members on this occasion as we soon reached maximum capacity. We aim to run more foaling events next season to make sure that everyone showing an interest doesn’t miss out. We’re delighted that our events are so well supported, so thank you all for your interest and for getting involved!

The morning discussion consisted of a variety of topics including (but not limited to):

  • Foaling kit requirements
  • Management of the pregnant mare
  • Physical and behavioural changes in the mare close to foaling
  • Brief explanation of the three stages of labour and normal foaling presentation
  • Brief explanation of common dystocia and post partum complications in the mare
  • Aftercare of the mare and foal. Including why colostrum is so important!

We introduced our resident mares and their 2017 foals who were very bold and appreciative of all the attention! The broodmares are always particularly pleased to be involved with the events as they know carrots and polos are plentiful!

Foal cuddles along with cake, biscuits, tea and coffee always go down well. We hope our visitors had an educational morning. The photos attached were taken on the day by the very talented Sarah Matthews who kindly organised the event with stud manager Natalie. Thank you Sarah.

We’re looking forward to holding more events in the future so keep an eye out on here and on Twitter for updates.

Kingsdown Stables Visit

By | News | No Comments

Jane, Charlotte and I managed to find a spare morning on Monday to visit Gold Return (Ourika x Gold Away) and Last Word (Intermission x Bated Breath) in training with David Lanigan at Kingsdown Stables, Lambourn.

Kingsdown really does have the most fantastic facilities, truly breathtaking. David’s team are second to none and it’s clear they all love their job; all horses were beautifully turned out and there wasn’t one person without a smile on their face the whole morning.

It was lovely to see all the horses so calm on a Monday morning, they went quietly up the gallops and walked home relaxed on loose reins. Once back at the yard (weather depending) David likes them to have a pick of grass. Luckily for us the sun was shining and we got to spend ten minutes watching them graze and have a fuss with the lads and lasses that look after them. We’re very grateful to the team for doing such a great job with our girls.

With Gold Return looking to have another run very soon and Last Word aiming to have her debut in September there is plenty to look forward to. We’ll keep any racing updates on the news page.

Open Day for Kingsley Napley Family Law Team

By | News | No Comments

On Thursday (11/8/16) we held an Open Day for Jane’s Kingsley Napley family law team. As it is prep season Charlotte and I had plenty to do with the horses first thing whilst Jane made the finishing touches to the garden and organised the caterers ready for our guests to arrive at 1pm.

After introductions and drinks in the garden we took a whirlwind tour of the stud showing the stock and outlining exactly what it is we do here. Surprisingly even our youngest foals lapped up the attention and didn’t seem fazed at all by the volume of people. The mares were very impressed by the polos (sugar free!) that were being dished out left, right and centre. The yearlings were beautifully behaved and in particular our Havana Gold filly out of Glee Club was taken with the children.

We then made our way back to the house for a fantastic buffet style lunch provided by Miss T Catering. The food was exquisite and very fitting for a lovely sunny day in the Oxfordshire countryside. The evening was very relaxed with more drinks and a couple of games/quizzes before taxis arrived to make sure our guests made it back into Banbury in time for their train home.

We have a great team here at Elkington and with Jane being such a brilliant host it was no surprise that everything went smoothly. I’d like to thank our whole team for all their help in making it such an enjoyable event. Our thanks also go to Helle Asquith from Kingsley Napley for all the beautiful photos from the day.

Sales Preparation

By | News | No Comments

Sales preparation is now well underway and the yearlings are taking everything in their stride. After morning exercise they get the remainder of the day to relax in their paddocks before coming in of an afternoon for a quick session of showing practice followed by grooming. It’s always amazing how quickly they settle into their new routine, they were all waiting at the gates to come in on day two!

The new incline treadmill is so far proving a beneficial addition to their work programme. It certainly keeps them focused and they seem to quite enjoy going on there, much to our surprise as it isn’t the quietest of units! It’s important to us that the yearlings leave here enjoying their work and so we vary exercise sessions between the treadmill, hand walking, the horse walker and lunging.

We have a slightly smaller draft this year comprising three lovely individuals. A racey filly by Helmet out of Jadwiga (Pivotal), a striking colt by Champs Elysees out of Skyrider (Dalakhani) and last but not least a stunning Havana Gold filly out of Glee Club (Kyllachy).

They will be on offer at Tatttersalls October yearling sale Book 3. Keep an eye on our yearling section for any updates and photos as they progress in the coming weeks.
